Donald Trump: The Man Behind the Name and Legacy

By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu, Beauty Benedict and William Willson

Names hold significant power and meaning, often chosen for personal preference, cultural significance, or symbolic reasons. The names we bear can shape our identities and influence our lives in profound ways.

So, before choosing a name, we must understand what we want and where the name might lead the bearer. Our names are the foundation of any greatness, so we must be careful before laying that foundation.

The name Donald means world ruler or ruler of the world, and Trump can mean surpass or outdo. When combined, these names give a grand meaning: Supreme Leader or Exceptional World Leader.

Now, who is Donald Trump? Has the meaning of these combined names affected his life? Is he truly a world ruler? Does he deserve to rule the world? Does he deserve to rule the great United States of America for a second time?

Early Life and Education

Donald Trump was born on June 14, 1946. Interestingly, June 14 is also Flag Day in the United States, a day that has been celebrated since 1777, long before Trump’s birth. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. This day symbolises the unity, strength, and resilience of the nation, and the flag’s colours carry deep meanings:

Red: Represents valour and bravery.

White: Symbolises purity and innocence.

Blue: Signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

The 13 stripes (7 red and 6 white) represent the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain and formed the United States. The connection between Donald Trump’s birthday and Flag Day is more than coincidental; it offers a symbolic link between his life and the values embodied by the American flag.

Just as the flag represents unity, strength, and resilience, these themes can be seen in Donald Trump’s life and career. Born in Queens, New York City, to Fred Trump, a real estate developer, and Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, a Scottish immigrant, Donald was the fourth of five children. The number four, often seen as a symbol of foundation, stability, balance, and structure, mirrors the solid grounding that Donald Trump received from his upbringing.

As a child, Donald Trump was known for being assertive, energetic, and sometimes rebellious—traits that echo the valour and bravery represented by the red in the flag. His strong-willed nature and tendency to challenge authority led his parents to send him to the New York Military Academy (NYMA) at age 13, where the structured environment channeled his energy and assertiveness into discipline and leadership. This disciplined upbringing laid the foundation for his future success, much like how the 13 stripes in the flag symbolise the original foundations of the United States.

The white in the flag symbolises purity and innocence, values that can be seen in Trump’s early ambitions and desire to learn from his father, Fred Trump, a successful real estate developer. Donald would often visit construction sites and learn about the real estate business, sparking his interest in pursuing a similar career. This early exposure played a crucial role in shaping his future ambitions and understanding of the industry. His approach to business and leadership reflects the blue in the flag, symbolising vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

From birth, Donald Trump seemed destined for greatness, embodying the qualities represented by the American flag. He didn’t just bear the name of a great man; he also worked toward becoming great. He didn’t just work hard; he worked smart, knowing that working smart pays off faster than just working hard. He believed that while many people work hard, taking a different approach by combining hard work with smart strategies yields better and quicker results. He didn’t just think like a billionaire; he worked like one. And being a billionaire means working smart to achieve good, quick results—surpassing expectations, much like his surname suggests.

In many ways, Donald Trump’s life story reflects the ideals of the American flag: bravery, discipline, vigilance, and a relentless pursuit of success. Just as the flag has been a symbol of resilience and strength for the United States, Trump’s life has been marked by his ability to rise to challenges and carve out a path of leadership and influence.

Education and Career

After acquiring a military school certificate, Donald Trump transferred to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1968 with a degree in economics. Every leader needs to have a touch of economics because the world needs 90 percent of the economy to be well taken care of to avoid suffering among the masses. As a smart man, and as someone who had the future of his people and the world in mind, he decided to study economics so he could rule the world better.

You may wonder, how can Donald Trump rule the world when there are nearly two hundred countries? Since the United States holds significant global power, anyone who sits in the Oval Office of the White House wields considerable influence over world affairs. By ‘ruling the world,’ I refer to the leadership and impact the U.S. president has on other nations. Of course, God is the ultimate ruler of the universe, and Donald Trump would acknowledge that as well.

As someone with entrepreneurial thinking, Trump is known to have worked at his father’s properties during the summers, performing tasks like collecting rent. This early involvement in the family business gave him a practical education in real estate and management. So, he was really ploughing the ground for a greater harvest.

Trump’s real estate career includes developing iconic properties like Trump Tower in New York City, making his brand synonymous with luxury, opulence, and at times, controversy. He gained national recognition as the host of the reality TV show The Apprentice, where his famous catchphrase You’re fired! became embedded in American pop culture. Known for his charisma and ability to command attention, Trump captivated audiences not just with his appearance but with his powerful use of words.

Trump’s influence extends beyond the boardroom and television screen; he is also a prolific author. His books, including The Art of the Deal, Trump: The Art of the Comeback, Trump: How to Get Rich, Think Like a Billionaire, The America We Deserve, Time to Get Tough: Making America Great Again!, and Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again, have had a significant impact, offering insights into his business strategies, motivational advice, and life philosophy. His writings have guided millions towards the path of success, providing them with the tools to navigate the complexities of life and business. Trump’s ability to connect with people through his words, whether in speeches, television, or print, has made him not only a leader but also a mentor to many aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders around the world.

Personality and Preferences

Donald Trump is often associated with the colour red, particularly because of the red ties he frequently wears and its symbolic connection to his political affiliation with the Republican Party. Trump enjoys fast food, particularly from McDonald’s, where he favours Big Macs, Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, and Diet Coke. He also prefers well-done steaks with ketchup.

Trump is an avid golfer and owns several golf courses around the world. Golf is considered his favourite game, and he often spent significant time playing even during his presidency. Before I learned about Donald Trump liking golf, I have always envisioned him as a vibrant grandpa who loves to play golf with his grandchildren. He is likable and knows how to charm people with his winning smile.

Aside from his favourites earlier mentioned, it might not be known by most people that this great man made a brief cameo appearance in the 1992 movie Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. In the film, the main character, Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin), finds himself lost in New York City and ends up at the Plaza Hotel, which Trump owned at that time.. When Kevin enters the hotel, he asks a man for directions to the lobby, and that man happens to be Donald Trump. Trump gives Kevin directions and then continues on his way. He is someone associated with directing the way to people, and he directs them as a good leader with a strong mind, to a better place. So if given the chance, Donald Trump would navigate America in the right direction.

Political Career

In 2016, Trump took the political world by storm, winning the presidency in a historic and unexpected victory. Donald Trump emerged as the 45th President of the United States after winning the 2016 presidential election. He officially became president on January 20, 2017, following his inauguration. Trump ran as the Republican candidate and defeated the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, in a highly contentious and closely watched election. Running on a platform of populism and nationalism, he promised to ‘Make America Great Again,’ focusing on issues like immigration, trade, and deregulation.

His presidency was marked by significant achievements, including tax reform, the appointment of conservative judges, and criminal justice reform. However, it was also marred by controversy, including his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, the impeachment trials, and his role in the January 6th Capitol riot. Trump’s leadership style was unconventional and often divisive, but he maintained a loyal base of supporters who appreciated his directness and outsider status.

Whether praised or criticised, Trump’s impact on American politics and society is undeniable. His legacy continues to be a topic of debate as he remains an active figure in the political arena, vying for the presidency once again.

Challenges and Controversies

Throughout his life and career, Donald Trump faced various challenges. For example, he dealt with legal issues over Trump University, accused of defrauding students, leading to a $25 million settlement. During the 2016 campaign, a tape from 2005 surfaced with controversial remarks about women, sparking widespread criticism but not derailing his campaign. Trump also faced scrutiny for his refusal to release his tax returns, a break from traditional presidential candidates, with investigations later revealing limited tax payments in several years.

These facts provide a well-rounded view of Donald Trump’s life, career, and political influence. If supporting his presidential bid, focusing on his achievements and the policies he championed during his time in office could be effective. Despite the controversies, Trump’s leadership style and impact on American politics remain significant.

Williams Willson popularly known as Honest-G

According to Williams Willson, a contributing writer to this article, ‘Donald Trump’s leadership has been marked by both triumphs and controversies. As America faces new challenges, his proven track record and bold approach may be just what the nation needs to move forward.

Donald Trump’s presidency and business career are subjects of much debate. On the one hand, his tenure brought about policies that some view as positive for the economy. For example, his administration pushed for tax reforms, such as the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which lowered corporate and individual taxes. This move was intended to stimulate economic growth and promote job creation. Additionally, Trump's focus on deregulation, particularly in the energy and financial sectors, was aimed at reducing the burden on businesses, allowing them to thrive more easily in the marketplace.

One of Trump’s lasting legacies is his reshaping of the judiciary. Through his appointment of conservative judges to the Supreme Court and lower federal courts, he left an imprint on the judicial system that will influence legal interpretations for years to come. In foreign policy, he also made notable strides, taking a hard stance on China and brokering normalization agreements between Israel and some Arab states. His populist rhetoric, which resonated with many Americans who felt ignored by the political establishment, further cemented his appeal to a certain portion of the electorate.

Personally, I want Donald Trump to win because I believe his policies, particularly on the economy and deregulation, benefited the country in many ways. His focus on putting America first, especially in areas like job creation and supporting American industries, speaks to the needs of the everyday American. While opinions about Trump are certainly divided, I believe that his leadership could bring about further positive change for the nation.

However, these actions were not without controversy. Trump’s policies, such as the travel ban affecting predominantly Muslim countries and the separation of migrant families at the US-Mexico border, were met with widespread criticism. His administration's environmental rollbacks and withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement also sparked concerns, particularly among those focused on addressing climate change.

Moreover, his presidency was marked by divisive rhetoric. His frequent use of social media and confrontational communication style deepened partisan divides, leaving a significant portion of the public either strongly supporting or opposing his approach.

In the end, Trump’s legacy is a complex one, with both positive and negative aspects. Whether one focuses on his economic policies or the controversies that surrounded his administration, it's clear that his time in office will continue to inspire discussion and debate for years to come. I remain hopeful that if given another term, Donald Trump can continue to build on the progress he started and make America stronger.’

Beauty Benedict, a great fan of Donald Trump and a contributor to this article has this to say, ‘As a proud supporter of Donald Trump, I am convinced that his leadership is exactly what the United States needs right now.  I strongly believe that his presidency will bring about significant positive changes not only in America but also globally.

Donald Trump is a leader who has demonstrated his ability to make tough decisions, prioritize the interests of his country, and stand firm in the face of adversity. During his previous tenure as president, he strengthened the U.S. economy, creating jobs and fostering a business-friendly environment. His focus on national security and his commitment to rebuilding America's infrastructure are just a few examples of his dedication to making America stronger and more resilient.

Moreover, Trump’s foreign policy achievements cannot be overlooked. He brokered peace deals in the Middle East, stood up to global threats, and renegotiated trade agreements to benefit the American people. His approach to diplomacy, though unconventional, has shown results that previous administrations could not achieve.

Recently, Donald Trump faced an unimaginable challenge when he was shot in the ear during his campaign. Miraculously, he survived this attack, proving once again his resilience and determination to fight for the American people. This incident highlights the courage and strength that he brings to the presidency—qualities that are desperately needed in today’s world.

As someone who values strong leadership and decisive action, I admire Trump’s ability to cut through the noise and focus on delivering results. His policies have the potential to inspire other nations, including Nigeria, to adopt strategies that prioritize growth, security, and the well-being of their citizens.

His return to the White House will undoubtedly lead to a safer, more prosperous America, which will have a positive ripple effect on the rest of the world. Let’s support a leader who has proven his dedication to making America great again and ensuring that the nation remains a beacon of hope and freedom.

Donald Trump’s journey from real estate mogul to the 45th President of the United States has been marked by significant highs and lows. Opinions about Trump vary widely: some, like Williams Willson, emphasise his achievements and potential for future leadership, while others, like Beauty Benedict, commend his resilience and decision-making.

Trump’s influence extends beyond his time in office, shaping discussions and debates across the globe. Whether viewed as a successful leader or a controversial figure, his legacy remains a topic of significant debate.
