The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has
arrested a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, at Lagos’ Murtala
Muhammed International Airport for importing synthetic cannabis known as
‘Canadian Loud.’ The arrest occurred on October 3, 2024, during the arrival of
a KLM flight from Canada.
In a statement issued by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi,
it was revealed that a joint search of Munju's luggage uncovered 74 parcels of
the illicit substance, weighing a total of 35.20 kilograms, hidden in two of
her three bags. The woman, a first-time visitor to Nigeria, admitted she had
been recruited through an online platform and promised $10,000 CAD for
successfully delivering the drugs in Lagos. She stated she needed the money to
fund her ongoing master's degree studies in Canada.
In a separate operation, the NDLEA also seized over 13
million pills of various opioids and 338,253 bottles of codeine-based syrup at
the Port Harcourt Ports Onne, Rivers State, on October 2 and 3, 2024. These
shipments, originating from India, were intercepted during a joint cargo
inspection with the Nigerian Customs and other agencies.
Further drug-related arrests were made at Lagos' Tincan
Seaport on October 3, when 100 parcels of Canadian Loud, weighing 50kg, were
found concealed in a container with imported vehicles. The illicit drugs were
traced to a warehouse in Ikorodu, where a suspect, Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim,
was taken into custody.
Additionally, NDLEA officers in Taraba State intercepted a bus traveling from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Jalingo, recovering 80 blocks of cannabis weighing 38kg hidden in bags of garri. Two suspects, Pako Thomas and Emmanuel Anyigor, were arrested in connection with this discovery. Another suspect, Chibuzor Okafor, was arrested on October 2 in Wukari, Taraba, with cannabis concealed in a similar manner.
In Lagos, on October 4, NDLEA officers arrested a woman,
Bolanle Ajenifuja, in possession of 700 liters of a mixture of local chapman
and illicit drugs, known as "skuchies." Three additional suspects
were also apprehended.
On the same day, NDLEA operatives destroyed nearly 10,000
kilograms of cannabis found on a farm spanning over three hectares in a
boundary community between Edo and Ondo states. 48 kilograms of processed
cannabis were recovered from the farm, according to Babafemi's statement.
These operations highlight the ongoing efforts by the
NDLEA to combat drug trafficking and the illicit drug trade in Nigeria.
