Opara Ujunwa Anthonet, CEO of Gabby’s Shoe Making, began her journey into shoemaking with a deep love for creativity and the joy of transforming ideas into stylish, functional footwear. Although she is a graduate, her passion for the craft led her to pursue shoemaking without formal training in the field. Through self-study, online courses, and the strong support of her family, Gabby has worked tirelessly to turn her vision into reality, aiming to build a shoe brand that stands out both in Nigeria and globally.
Can you share the moment or inspiration that first sparked your interest in shoemaking?
My interest in shoemaking was sparked by my deep love for
creativity and the joy of transforming ideas into reality. Ever since I was
young, I’ve been fascinated by the art of crafting something unique. Shoemaking
allows me to express that creativity in a tangible way. There’s something
magical about turning raw materials into something functional and stylish. The
idea that I can create something from scratch, and make it different from what
everyone else is doing, is what drives me every day.
What
have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an apprentice in the
shoemaking industry?
One of the most significant challenges I’ve encountered
as an apprentice is the lack of proper mentorship. Without someone guiding me
step by step, it often feels like I’m navigating in the dark, especially in the
early stages. However, I’ve learned to rely on my passion, resilience, and my
faith in God to overcome these obstacles. I believe that with determination, I
can still excel even in the face of adversity. Every challenge becomes an
opportunity for growth, and it’s helped me become more resourceful and
innovative in my learning.
How
did you begin learning the art of making shoes, especially without direct
formal training from your boss?
I owe a lot to God for granting me the wisdom and
strength to pursue shoemaking. Even though I didn’t receive formal training
from my boss, my passion and love for the craft pushed me to learn
independently. I would observe others, watch videos, and try out new techniques
on my own. It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve always believed that if you are truly
committed to something, you will find ways to learn and grow. My
self-discipline and determination have allowed me to pick up the skills faster
than I expected.
How
have online courses and self-study influenced your growth as a shoemaker, and
what challenges have you faced while learning independently?
The decision to take online courses was crucial in my
development as a shoemaker. Since I wasn’t getting formal training, I sought
out knowledge through online platforms. These courses helped me understand the
theoretical foundations of shoemaking, from design principles to material
selection, and allowed me to practice techniques I wouldn’t have learned
otherwise. However, studying independently came with its own set of
challenges—there was no one to correct me when I made mistakes. But I
persevered, determined to master my craft. The most rewarding part of this
journey was realizing the difference between 'footwear' and 'shoe,' which
opened my eyes to the subtleties of the industry.
Can
you tell us about the support you’ve received from your family, especially your
father, in helping you pursue your passion for shoemaking?
I am incredibly fortunate to have a supportive family,
especially my father, Opara Milletus Ejike, fondly known as ‘ADIDAS.’ He has
gone above and beyond to ensure I succeed in shoemaking, from providing me with
the materials I need to promoting my work to his friends and acquaintances. My
family has always believed in my dream, and their unwavering support has given
me the confidence to push through the challenges. Knowing that they are behind
me every step of the way makes me even more determined not to let them down.
What
do you believe will set your future brand, Gabby’s Shoe Making, apart from
other shoe brands in Nigeria?
My vision for Gabby’s Shoe Making is to create a brand
that stands out through innovation, craftsmanship, and authenticity. I aspire
to challenge not only local brands but also renowned international brands like
those from Italy and England. What will set my brand apart is the attention to
detail, quality materials, and the fusion of modern and traditional design
elements that reflect both my creativity and cultural heritage. My dream is not
just to create shoes but to build a brand that is synonymous with excellence
and uniqueness.
What
are your thoughts on the representation of women in male-dominated industries
like shoemaking, and what advice would you give to women who want to enter
similar fields?
Women have every right to excel in male-dominated
industries, and shoemaking is no exception. I believe it’s essential for women
to break through these barriers and show that they can succeed just as well—if
not better—than their male counterparts. My advice to women is simple: don’t be
discouraged by societal expectations or criticisms. If you’re passionate about
something, pursue it with all your heart. The road may be tough, but your hard
work and dedication will eventually speak for themselves. Stay focused, be
confident, and remember that you are capable of achieving anything you set your
mind to.
Once
you complete your apprenticeship and establish your brand, what are your next
steps in terms of growth and expansion for Gabby’s Shoe Making?
After establishing Gabby’s Shoe Making as a recognized
brand, my goal is to expand it into a full-scale company. I want to create job
opportunities and employ skilled workers who share my vision for excellence.
Beyond that, I plan to open a shoemaking school where aspiring shoemakers can
learn the craft. It’s important to me to give back and provide others with the
opportunities I didn’t have. Ultimately, I want Gabby’s Shoe Making to become a
household name, not just in Nigeria but globally.
What
has been your proudest moment so far in your journey as an apprentice
shoemaker?
My proudest moment so far was when I successfully
produced my own shoes just two months into my apprenticeship. That moment
marked the beginning of my confidence in my abilities. What made it even more
special was seeing my family and others proudly wearing my creations. Knowing
that people are walking around in shoes I made with my own hands fills me with
a deep sense of accomplishment.
Looking
ahead, where do you see yourself and Gabby’s Shoe Making in the next five to
ten years? What’s your ultimate vision for the brand?
In the next five to ten years, I envision Gabby’s Shoe
Making becoming a global brand, recognized for its craftsmanship, innovation,
and unique designs. My ultimate goal is to make my brand one of the most
respected in the world. I see my shoes being worn by people from all walks of
life, from everyday consumers to celebrities and fashion icons. I want to build
a legacy that will stand the test of time, where Gabby’s Shoe Making is
synonymous with quality, style, and creativity.
