The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a
ban on any form of celebration marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day in the
South-East region. In a statement released on Monday, the separatist group
warned that anyone found participating in Independence Day activities would be
regarded as an enemy of the land.
IPOB urged Igbo residents to either go about their
regular activities or stay at home but strictly avoid taking part in any
festivities related to Nigeria's Independence. The group emphasized that
although the Igbo people played a significant role in Nigeria's fight for
independence, the union with Nigeria has not been beneficial to them.
The statement declared that the ban on celebrating
Nigeria’s Independence has been in effect and urged Biafrans worldwide to
distance themselves from the occasion. IPOB expressed its dissatisfaction with
Nigeria's unity, referring to it as forced, and called for support in restoring
Biafra's independence.
"Do not participate in any Nigerian Independence
celebration. Biafrans should reject the forced unity and bloodshed tied to this
Independence. Parents are also advised to keep their children from attending
any Independence-related activities," the group stressed.
IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to the restoration of
Biafra’s sovereignty and warned against flying the Nigerian flag or engaging in
any Independence Day events across the region.
